The decorative art from all periods largely draws its inspiration from the plant. This is particularly in the Middle Ages and its break with the imitation of previous centuries that the sculptors of cathedrals will reconnect with their environment: vines, ferns, acanthus ... The inexhaustible beauty and richness of natural forms is suitable for decorative designs, from the most humble to the most sophisticated.

It is however in the interpretation of geometric form and balance masses that ornamentation expresses its strength aesthetics: the distribution of full and empty, the play of light and matter provides the balance of composition.
